MAY 1865 VIEW OF PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA

Antebellum Portrait from Petersburg – This portrait was found in an old house in Petersburg; the frame, now in great condition, was almost black with soot and dirt when we first obtained it. After some cursory cleaning, the portrait came to life, as did the great frame – the sitter is a young woman, attired in clothing, in a style that pre-dates the Civil War. The canvas remains strong; a good cleaning would bring out a lot more color in the image. The original, period frame is a heavy and thick, fine, lemon gilt, dating to the 1850s. The work is unsigned, and it measures as follows: Frame size – 37.75” x 32.5”; Sight size – 29.75” x 24.75”. SOLD
