Civil War Camp Trunk of Capt. Amos F. Noyes, Maine Infantry – This is a fine example of a Civil War officer’s trunk. It was made in the so-called “Jenny Lind style”, with a tooled brown leather covering, with sheet iron strapping and large brass, decorative tacks. The trunk has an ornate, brass lock, with a high relief lion’s head in the middle of the lock. The interior of the trunk is lined with a blue and white paper, printed with a patriotic, winged eagle motif. The upper section of the trunk has a small compartment, with a tie-flap opening, that is stenciled with the name of Lt. Noyes, indicating this trunk was with him when he initially enlisted, at the onset of the war, in the 14th Maine Infantry. The trunk certainly was with Noyes throughout his war-time service, as its overall condition is indicative of heavy use and travel. Regardless of the obvious use-related condition, the trunk remains in stable and generally good condition. There are some areas of leather loss, but most of the covering remains in supple condition. The interior is in excellent condition, with some areas of water staining. The trunk measures as follows: L 30.25”; W – 18.75”; H – 16.25”

Captain Amos F. Noyes of Norway, Maine would initially enlist, at the age of 48, in Co. G, 14th  Maine Infantry and later serve in the 23rd and 32nd Maine Infantries. Noyes was listed as wounded on 5/18/1864, at Spotsylvania Court House, Va. He was mustered out of service on 12/12/1864. There is much more research that we have completed on Captain Noyes; we will convey a notebook containing this research to the next owner of the trunk.
