Civil War Cap Box by Hoover, Calhoun & Co.

Civil War Cap Box by Hoover, Calhoun & Co. – This cap box remains in very strong condition. The leather is pliable, exhibiting a minor bit of crackling and finish loss.   The inner flap is in equally good condition, with both ears intact. The back straps are both present, with one having been torn at the point of attachment to the actual box; this can be readily repaired. The inner flap has a very strong “Hoover, Calhoun & Co. Makers New – York” marking; the latch tab has what appears to be the original soldier’s initials “F M M” neatly stamped into its tip. The wool remains within the pouch proper, although it is no longer attached. This is an excellent example of a maker marked, issue cap box. SOLD
