Civil War Colt Special Model of 1861 Rifled Musket – State of New Jersey Contract
Civil War Colt Special Model of 1861 Rifled Musket – State of New Jersey Contract – This is a fine example of a contract rifled musket manufactured by Colt Firearms Co., during the 1861 to 1865 war period. Research indicates that as many as 100,000 of these were produced during the war, with many going to supply various Northern states. This three-band, .58 cal., rifled musket is in overall excellent condition; these muskets were finished “in the bright” and the finish on this example is clean, with some minor discoloration on the lock plate and hammer. As with all of these Colts, the stamping on the lock plate, which is typically rather light, reads: “U.S. / COLT’S P.F.A. MFG CO / HARTFORD, C”, in front of the hammer; behind the hammer is the date “1862”. An American eagle is stamped into the nipple bolster. Just distal to the breech plug are deeply stamped, the period proof marks: “VP / Eagle / 1862”; along the side of the breech area is stamped: “NJ” indicating that this rifle was one of those contracted for the state of New Jersey. Also, deeply stamped on the stock, just below the “NJ” on the barrel, are the same state designation letters: “NJ”. The ramrod is a reproduction. All barrel bands are original and have the requisite “U” stamped on each. The bore is excellent, as well. This is an excellent example of the Colt Special Model of 1861.
