Civil War Kepi Cap with Original Corps Badge Affixed – This is an excellent example of an original Civil War, field worn kepi, in overall very good condition. The hat, constructed of natural indigo-dyed wool, exhibits field repairs and use. The sweat band is present, but does have some wear and use tears. The original, brown cotton lining is in place, as well as the black enameled crown. Tantalizingly, there are initials scratched in the crown, and a small piece of a period newspaper is still attached to the surface of the crown. On the exterior of the crown is an original (to the hat), woven wool 6th Corps, 2nd Division badge; the badge is structurally sound, but certainly “was there” during the war. The hat has a fine enameled and bound brim; the original chin strap, adjustment buckle and general service eagle buttons are present, as well. This is a great hat, that certainly “saw the elephant.”
