Civil War Soldier’s Mess Plate – This is the real Civil War soldier’s mess plate; often mistakenly called tin, this plate is, as most so-called “tin ware” of the Civil War period is, was manufactured of rolled sheet iron, cold-dipped in tin, as a rust and corrosion inhibitor. This is a “dead real” Civil War mess plate, not a pie plate from a later date. The plate is in fine condition, retaining most of its original tinning. These are no longer easy to find and were an essential element of all Civil War soldier’s haversacks. SOLD
