Civil War U.S. Belt Plate Dug at Ft. Mahone in Petersburg: This U.S. belt plate was excavated in the 1950s when the lot for the elementary school that currently sits on the site of Ft. Mahone (“Fort Damnation”), was cleared. The plate has a nice, grainy chocolate patina; the lead is complete on the back, although only one of the triangular belt hooks remains, and the belt adjuster hook is also missing. Nice early dug plate from the site of the fort over which President Lincoln traversed on his way to meet with Gen. Grant to discuss the pursuit of Lee, after the fall of Petersburg, in early April of 1865.
