Excellent Pair of Civil War Period Child’s Brogans with Dated Toe Plates

$325

Excellent Pair of Civil War Period Child’s Brogans with Dated Toe Plates – These rarely found, Civil War period child’s brogans are constructed of a mellow, brown, soft calf-hide; they are lined with a buff cotton. There are five lacing holes on each shoe, reinforced with brass circular devices (not split riveted like post-Civil War examples). The soles of the shoes are affixed to the uppers with diamond shaped wooden pegs; the stacked, Cuban style heels, are nailed with period, cut nails. The brass, protective toe-plates are present on each shoe; the impressed patent date appears on each toe-plate and appears to be Nov 29, 1859. Both Shoes are in excellent condition. We often see period child’s boots, but rarely do we encounter brogans. Measurements: Length -  5¼”; Height (at highest point) – 4½”. “
