High Quality Pre-Civil War Wheel Hat – Made by Bent and Bush
High Quality Pre-Civil War Wheel Hat Made by Bent and Bush – This rare wheel style hat is very similar to the U.S. Army Model 1839 hat of the Mexican War era. The body of this hat is constructed of a fine, deep blue, English broadcloth wool. The brim is black, patent leather, bound with stitched, black painted heavy canvas. The hat appears to have had, at some point, buttons on either side of the brim, yet no ghost of a chin strap is apparent. The interior of the cap is lined, in the crown, with a fine, mahogany colored, heavy, pebble-grained leather. This crown lining is embossed, with a blue-green stamping, with the name of the famous hat maker, “Bent & Bush / Boston”. The sweatband is composed of the same, fine, heavy mahogany colored leather; it is stitched along the upper rim of the band. Overall, this hat is in superior condition, and it represents an extreme rarity in early, U.S. military headgear.
