Leather Civil War Soldier’s Housewife
Leather Civil War Soldier’s Housewife – We have had several roll-up style Civil War soldier’s housewives, but this is one of the only leather box styles we have encountered. This housewife has multiple compartments and elements. When opened, the interior is lined with in a rust-colored silk, which remains in excellent condition; attached to this interior are several compartments for needles, sewing implements and an interior box that contains the original thimble. Beneath one of the interior flaps is a pad of cream-colored wool that is layered to accept several needles – many of the latter are still inserted into the woolen pad. In its day, this housewife must have been somewhat expensive as it is both exceedingly functional and decorative, as well. The housewife is in superior condition.
