Mid-19th Century Landscape in Incredible Frame
Mid-19th Century Landscape in Incredible Frame – We recently obtained this beautiful, pastoral landscape; its lengthy ownership passed through an old Petersburg, Virginia family (Perry Adams Antiques will provide the buyer with a detailed provenance). The artist’s signature, which appears in the lower left hand corner of the work, is “F. Williamson”. The painting is attributed to be the work of Frederick Williamson (British, 1835–1900); Williamson was a visual artist who worked principally in watercolor, but also completed several works in oil. This particular painting is oil on canvas; it remains in its original stretcher and is in overall excellent condition. The canvas, which is strong, could, if personal taste dictated so, be cleaned, but as is, it has a wonderful aged patina and resultant, highly appealing appearance. The frame, which is also original to the painting, is in fine condition; it is one of the best examples of mid-19th century, ornate frames we have encountered – its lushly curvaceous and superior gesso work is not just of superior quality, but the physical depth of the frame and gesso decorative elements are simply way beyond even some of the finest frames we have seen or handled. Numerous works by Frederick Williamson have come to the market at several significant auction houses, including James D. Julia Auctioneers and Christie’s; his works are also components of several important museum collections. SOLD
The painting measures as follows: Frame size – 33” x 39” x 4.25”; sight size – 17.75” x 23.5”.
