Pre-Civil War Brass Faced Officer’s Bit with Patriotic Eagle Bosses
Pre-Civil War Brass Faced Officer’s Bit with Patriotic Eagle Bosses -
This extremely rare bit is in strong condition. It has striking patriotic, Eagle bosses mounted to each side. These rarely encountered bits date to before the Civil War and may have been early enough to have been used in the 1830s to the Mexican War eras; they are most often associated with use by Generals and other high ranking officers. The bit appears to be made of iron, but is covered completely with brass, which remains completely intact and retains a fine, aged patina. This bit recently surfaced in Maine and is a most desirable example of a very rare and essential element of early 19th century, American military horse equipment. SOLD.
