Rare Antebellum Stenciled Hat Box – This box was recently discovered in a rural farmhouse in Dinwiddie County, Va. The house, built in 1917, sits upon the stone foundation of the original, early 19th century house, once standing in this location. Both houses remained in the same family, for over 200 years. Amongst the many interesting items we recovered from this house, was this heavy, pasteboard hatbox that is in overall great condition. Interestingly, the box is covered with c. 1840s style stenciling, often seen on period fancy chairs. The box is painted a reddish hue on its interior. The box’s measurements are as follows: Height / Depth: 8.75”; Diameter: 10”
