RARE Norfolk Stoneware Jar

RARE NORFOLK, VA Merchant’s Jar – King & Toy

Extremely rare cobalt-decorated storage jar impressed with the mark KING & TOY/NORFOLK (highlighted in cobalt) for Norfolk, Virginia druggists Col. N. C. King and Thomas Dallam Toy.  Cylindrical form with a tooled foot, rounded shoulder, flared rim, and decorated on the front with a horizontal flowering cobalt vine.  Likely made in, and attributed to, the lower James River Valley (Henrico County or Richmond, VA) c. 1845-1855.  This is the only example known bearing this mark.  Tight crack on the right front descending from the rim, down the body, and onto the underside; two small lines on the underside, one of which goes up the side about an inch.  10 7/8” tall X 4 ½” wide at the rim (6 3/8” at the base).
