U.S. Model 1863 Percussion Rifled Musket, by North & Clement – These rifles were manufactured in Springfield, Mass. from 1863 to 1864. A total quantity of 11,000 were produced. They are all .58 cal., with 40” barrels and three barrel bands. The lock is dated 1864 as is the top of the barrel; forward of the eagle and U.S. on the lock, the plate is marked ”S.N.&W.T.C./for/Massachusetts”. On the side of the barrel, near the breech plug VP over an eagle head is incised; below this, on the side of the barrel, are the inspector’s initials “LTR”. Finally, the flat nipple bolster has an eagle incised. This gun is in excellent condition. Its walnut stock retains the original finish.
