U.S. Springfield M1863 Type I Rifled Musket
U.S. Springfield Type I M1863 Rifled Musket – Model 1863 Type I Springfield rifled musket in overall very good condition; the walnut stock is in very good condition, with no visible inspector’s cartouche, but it does exhibit only light handling wear. There is a mysteriously intriguing hole at the right side of the butt stock, next to the butt plate. The barrel has a light patina, and some minor pitting near the breech that almost obscures the VP and eagle and completely obscures the date. The lock and hammer are both strong, and the lock plate has the proper 1863 date, federal eagle, and “U.S. Springfield”. The bolster has some pitting, but the eagle is visible. The rifled bore is in good condition with some minor pitting. The gun has the proper, Type I, split style barrel bands and swelled tulip ramrod. This rifled musket is a decent representative Model 1863 .58 caliber Springfield, evidencing the desirable mid-war date.
