Rare Mid-19th Century, Civil War Period Man’s White Beaver Slouch Hat
We have had many of the usual black beaver hats, but we have only had one other white or dyed beaver hat of the Civil War period – they are very difficult to find. This hat has a rather high crown, 5.5” in height, with a rather wide brim – 3”; the hat’s diameter is 15.5”. The hat remains in overall very good condition, with some obvious nips on the exterior. The crown is surrounded by a beige, silk grosgrain, narrow ribbon or band; the brim is bound with the same type and color of ribbon.

Rare Mid-19th Century, Civil War Period Man’s White Beaver Slouch Hat – We have had many of the usual black beaver hats, but we have only had one other white or dyed beaver hat of the Civil War period – they are very difficult to find. The interior of the hat retains most of its original, brown wallpaper type lining, with the hat maker’s name – “John Sufferins” – gold embossed on the interior of the crown. The original, wide leather sweatband remains in the hat and is in good condition, with some obvious wear and age dryness. These are very difficult hats to obtain today and are certainly representative of period civilian wear, as well as Confederate soldier wear, as well. Â
