Late 19th Century Folk Art Painting of a Native American Paddling a Canoe – This oil on canvas painting dates to the 1880s or 1890s; it depicts a Native American, probably Iroquois or Mohawk, paddling a decoratively painted, birch bark canoe. In front of the paddler is his bow and quiver. The Indian’s reflection appears in the body of water in which he is paddling, and the wooded, steep banks appear in the background. The painting is on a pre-20th century, rag canvas affixed to its original stretcher; there is no frame. The painting is signed with only the initials of the artist – “AJC”. The painting could use cleaning and some minor infill; there is minor craquelure throughout; there is one small tear in the canvas, that can readily be repaired. The image is striking and a great example of Americana.
