Winchester Model 1873 Rifle .32 W.C.F. Caliber Made in 1884 – This Model 1873 Winchester, with a standard 24” round barrel, in .32 cal., has a serial number of 158703A, indicating it was manufactured in 1884. These rifles were manufactured from 1873 until 1919, with a total of 720,600 made. This example, like the usual Model 73s, has a tubular magazine under a round barrel, with an iron frame and side plates, thereby being distinctly different from the preceding Model 1866. The stock is oil-stained walnut; the hammer, lever and butt plate are blued and casehardened. The marking “Model 1873” is stamped on the frame tang; the serial number “158703A” is stamped on the back segment of the trigger guard, visible when the lever is raised; the caliber “32 CAL.” is stamped on the bottom of the brass elevator block and on the barrel at the breech; the Winchester name and address is stamped on the top of the barrel. The butt plate is crescent shaped; the rear sight is the adjustable, open style, sporting variety. This rifle is considered to be a Third Model 1873 – the dust cover is an integral aspect of the frame; these Third Models are in the serial number 90,000 to the end of production.

This ’73 remains in overall very good condition; traces of original bluing and casehardening remain; the firing action is crisp; moderate amount of rifling remains; the stock is in great shape.

Winchester Model 73s remain, in all probability, the most famous of their firearms; the gun was featured in the 1950 film “Winchester ‘73” starring Jimmy Stewart.
