Original Possibly Confederate Enfield Rifled Musket Wooden Ammunition Crate – We have had only one, war period, musket cartridge crate; that example was pulled off the bottom of the James River by divers, in the 1980s, at City Point, Virginia. That crate held .69 cal. rifled musket cartridges. This crate is in excellent, nonexcavated condition and has, clearly stenciled, in large, white letters – “ENFIELD RIFLE MUSKT” – on one end of the crate; there is additional stenciling above and below this wording, but for now, those words remain indecipherable. On the opposite end of the crate, which retains less original paint, the word “Enfield” is readable. The crate retains a considerable amount of original, blue-green paint, comparable to the color that appeared on the Confederate limber chests we have had. The box is quite sturdy, with dovetailed and cut-nailed corners and heavy, wood carrying handles on each end of the box. During its original period of use, there had been a lid, obviously nailed to the top of the crate; the lid is long gone.
