Early Battlefield Pickup M1860 Cavalry Saber with Confederate Black Paint – This M1860 cavalry saber was, according to the long-time collector from whom we obtained the sword, picked up off a battlefield somewhere in Virginia, sometime in the late 19th century. The sword has never been in the ground, as the blade, although covered with surface rust, remains completely intact; it is no longer possible to discern the maker’s name or date of production on the ricasso. There is no leather wrap or twisted brass wire remaining on the grip; most of the wooden, ribbed grip remains, although it is missing a noticeable section, which may have been lost during the period of use. The pommel cap remains in place; the knucklebow branches are all present, but one has broken off the guard, indicating the sword having been struck during the war and then apparently dropped. The brass elements of the sword appear to have a considerable amount of black paint remaining, which we usually associate with Confederate use – an attempt to hide the glint of one’s saber. This is an interesting battlefield relic and from the well-preserved state it is in, it was picked up not that long after the end of the war.
