Civil War Artillery Driver’s Whip – We have only had one other of these Civil War artillery driver’s whips; the previous one we had was a near duplicate to this example, but had been recovered by divers, in the 1980s, from the muddy silt of the river bottom at City Point, the Union Army’s base of operations during the Siege of Petersburg. This non-excavated example remains in overall very good condition. Constructed of woven, heavy, brown, bridle leather, the whip has a wooden grip, to which the woven leather is attached via small tacks. The whip remains full length and is pliable and supple. The whip measures approximately 4 ft. in length. This is a rare, light artillery accoutrement, rarely encountered today.
