Pre-Civil War c. 1855-1860 Rifleman Officer’s Epaulettes – These epaulettes are rare examples of c. 1855 – 1860, Rifleman Officer’s dress epaulettes. They are constructed of a green colored wool, with green wool tassels and a double row of green cording comprising the crescent end of each board; at each board end is a cuff-sized, Eagle “R” button. The underside of each epaulette features an extended, brass hook for coat shoulder attachment; the underside of each of the pair is covered with a brown, polished cotton and is padded beneath the crescent end. The epaulettes remain in over good condition, with some minor wear / outdoor use staining. This is the first pair of Rifleman epaulettes we have had.

Pre-Civil War US rifleman officers were primarily drawn from the ranks of the Regular Army, often with West Point training, and sometimes from state militias. These officers would have held ranks within infantry regiments, potentially including positions like regimental commander (Colonel), second-in-command (Lieutenant Colonel), adjutant (First Lieutenant), and quartermaster (First Lieutenant). Some may have also served as staff officers within larger formations.
