Dug Confederate Kenansville Cavalry Saber and Scabbard
$750
Dug Confederate Kenansville Cavalry Saber and Scabbard – This saber and scabbard were excavated in the 1980s in Amelia County, Virginia, on the Retreat Route taken by General Lee’s depleted Army of Northern Virginia, to its fateful surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. Approximately half of the saber and scabbard remain. Peened to the tang of the blade is the original, tiered brass, pommel cap. The scabbard retains one brass mount with its iron ring; the scabbard is crudely lap-seamed and retains its original, Kenansville brass throat that evidences the factory assembly Roman numerals. The sword’s blade has a single, unstopped fuller and still fits easily into the scabbard. Both the saber and scabbard remain in excellent dug condition, with no significant rust scaling or flaking. This is a rare dug artifact, and the only one that we have had.
