Confederate Side Knife – This somewhat crudely fashioned side knife remains in overall, very good condition; there is a small piece of wood missing at the very top of the grip. The knife has a reasonably well crafted, spear point type blade with a flat ricasso; the blade is affixed to the wood grip via the blade tang inserted into the grip, with an iron ring used to tighten the tang in place. There is a crude, brass, diamond-shaped, somewhat diminutive guard between the iron tang ring and the knife’s blade. The wooden grip expands into a bulbous palm-held area and appears to be made of oak. This knife is quite similar to the North Carolina side knife described and pictured on page 252 in the significant work on Confederate knives: “Confederate Bowie Knives” by Jack Melton, Josh Phillips and John Sexton.
