Colt M1862 Police Revolver – The Colt Model 1862 Police revolver was manufactured between 1861 and 1873, they were serial numbered with the Model 1862 Pocket Navy with approximately 47,000 total pistols produced, of which about 28,000 were the 1862 Police revolvers. Although enumerated as the Model 1862, actual production began in 1861, with serial numbering up to roughly 47000. The M1862 Colt Police is a five-shot revolver with a rebated, half-fluted cylinder; it is a .36 caliber percussion revolver; it has a creeping style loading lever. The grips are one-piece walnut; the frame, hammer and lever are casehardened, with the remaining steel parts being blued; the gripstraps were silver-plated brass. This example has the longer barrel of those produced and measures 6.5” in length; all the numbers (6093) match with the exception of the wedge. The serial number is indicative of early production in 1861. The round barrel exhibits the standard address on the top:
“ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S.”
On the left side of the frame is stamped:
“COLTS / PATENT”
Stamped within one flute of the cylinder is:
“PAT SEPT. 10th 1850”
The pistol remains in overall excellent condition: substantial amounts of casehardening and bluing remain, as does the silvering on the grip and back straps. The firing mechanics are good and the cylinder indexes well.
