Civil War Officer’s Crimson Red Silk Sash – This Civil War officer’s, silk, crimson red sash remains in very good condition; the sash is full requisite length at 9 feet and regulation width at 5”. The woven silk retains its original, bright, crimson color, exhibiting a few minor period stains. Both “acorns” remain in good condition, although one is missing the circumferential cording; all tassels remain in place. These crimson sashes were worn by all officers in all branches of service – Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, Engineers and Ordnance. Worn wrapped around the waist twice, then tied on the left side of the officer; by regulation, the tassels could not extend more than 18 inches below the tied area on the waist. Officers designated as “Officer of the Day” could wear their sash diagonally, across the chest, from the right shoulder to the left hip.
