Original Confederate B. Douglas Cavalry Saber
$6,450
Original Confederate B. Douglas Cavalry Saber – This rare Confederate saber was found in an old home in Buckingham County, Virginia. These swords were manufactured, in comparatively limited numbers, by Blaise Douglas in Columbia, South Carolina. This saber exhibits the somewhat distinctive characteristics encountered in B. Douglas swords: a large, mushroom shaped pommel cap; a noticeable swell in the center area of the grip; a leather covered grip with a double twisted brass wire wrap; a thick leather washer at the juncture of the blade and the guard; iron lap-seamed scabbard with brass mounts and throat; distinctive scabbard drag, with a flat sphere at each end. This Douglas sword remains in overall very good condition; the unstopped blade exhibits a plum gray color and is in overall excellent shape; the grip and the wired wrap are all intact and in place; there is an age crack in the wood of the grip which does not detract from the leather wrap or wire; the knucklebow is somewhat loose where it enters the pommel. There is a considerable amount of original black paint on the scabbard; this paint is often encountered with Confederate sabers – surmised to be an anti-glare mode. This is a superior example of a rare, Confederate saber.
Measurements: OL (including scabbard) – 42.75”; OL (sword) – 40.25”; Blade length – 34.25”
