1830s – 1840s SHEET-IRON ONION-GLOBE LANTERN – This is a beautifully crafted early 19th century, ring handle, spun glass, onion globe carry lantern. The top and bottom sheet iron elements exhibit pierced star patterns; the base is removable and is fitted with a double-tube, whale oil burner. The globe is a finely blown and spun glass that exhibits the obvious swirling streaks in the glass from the manufacturing process. Much of the original japanning remains on the sheet iron. The lantern measures as follows: 16″ H to top of cap, 4.75″ D base.
