Confederate States Armory Kenansville Type II or 2nd Model Cavalry Saber – This saber is a fine example of Louis Froelich’s edged weapon production at the Confederate States Armory in Kenansville, North Carolina; it retains its original, sheet iron scabbard, with both brass sword belt mounts, throat and its original, crudely crafted drag, as well as obvious joining, soldered lap seam along the length of the scabbard. The brass guard exhibits an appealing, un-cleaned patina, as does the pommel cap. The wood grip is grooved with twelve furrows, covered in thin black leather, wrapped with a single strand of copper wire or Confederate “red brass”, which appears to have been painted black. The blade exhibits a dull pewter gray patina and is in overall very good condition, with some minor flaws, but no oxidation; the original leather washer remains where the blade enters the hilt. The brass guard is slightly loose on the blade, resulting in some minor wobble; regardless, all of the construction remains quite solid. We can find no Roman Numerals or other markings on this saber. This is a superior example of a Confederate, Kenansville saber.

Measurements: Overall length (in the scabbard) – approx.. 42.75”; overall length of sword (out of the scabbard) – 40.25”; blade length – 34”
