Civil War Frock Coat of a Federal Major of the Infantry – We have had several line officer’s, single-breasted, Federal frock coats, but it has been quite a long time since we have been able to obtain a Field and Staff grade, double-breasted, Federal officer’s frock coat. This example remains in overall good condition, with some scattered, minor insect damage and two, modestly larger areas of textile damage, approximately the size of a quarter; there is what appears to be a period, hand sewn repair near the left shoulder rank strap – should the buyer of the coat desire us to do so, we can take the coat to our textile conservator for historically accurate repair. Regardless, this coat is a very nice example of a Union, infantry major’s frock coat. The coat exhibits all of the desired characteristics of a genuine, wartime frock coat:

exterior body constructed of deep blue, indigo dyed, fine English, broadcloth wool; wide “balloon” elbows; un-hemmed skirts; polished cotton lined, tail pockets; heavily quilted, green satinet, interior body lining; off white, cotton sleeve linings; Civil War period, Union staff officer coat and cuff buttons; combination of treadle machine and hand sewing in the tailoring of the coat; original pair of Civil War period, major of the infantry rank straps. It is obvious that this coat was worn in the field, and that its wartime owner saw action. This frock coat is a great example of a difficult to find Federal officer’s uniform.
