Federal Issue Civil War Enlisted Man’s Cavalry Shell Jacket – We have had several Civil War, U.S. cavalry shell jackets, and the vast majority were surplus jackets, in near pristine condition. This example was “there”; it was actually worn, during the war. The jacket remains in overall good condition, retaining all of its original buttons and yellow, worsted wool piping; both back bolsters remain, as well. The yellow piping’s color is somewhat faded, evidencing weather exposure and wear; the lining, which we have had stabilized by our textile conservator, evidences field use and wear, as well. The linen sleeve linings remain in very good condition and evidence no inspector’s or size stampings. The kersey, blue wool, forming the body of the jacket, exhibits a strong, blue color and is in good condition. This shell jacket is a great example of a war period, cavalry jacket that was actually issued and worn.
