Fine Example of a Rare Louisiana Confederate Officer’s Cockade – This very rarely encountered, Civil War period Louisiana officer’s hat or frock coat cockade remains in relatively very strong condition. It exhibits a Louisiana seal, pelican, feeding her young, coat size button, most likely made by Horstmann & Allien, affixed to red and white, woven cotton ribbons. The shank penetrates through the ribbons and is held in place via a wire, adorned with a gold bullion-like decorative fringe; we believe that this wire was originally either merely decorative or utilized to susped the cockade from a button or place on the officer’s frock coat. There is a buckram-like backing that may be of a more recent vintage, used to stabilize the cockade from the back. These cockades are occasionally seen in period images of Confederate officers, but today, they are exceedingly hard to find. The cockade measures as follows: Width – 4.25”; Height – 2.25”.
