Civil War Period Brogans – This rare pair of war period brogans remains in overall, very good condition. To find original, period brogans is nearly impossible now, so this pair would suffice to add to any Civil War, military collection or display. Both brogans exhibit the construction mode and style of war period brogans – long, square-toed vamps; two pairs of four, non-reinforced lace holes, per brogan; interior counters, sewn in place from the exterior, at each heel; iron, reinforcing rivets affixing each heel section to the vamp. It is conceivable that these brogans were constructed in England and shipped to the U.S. – possibly, through the blockade, to the Confederacy. The British utilized early, iron split rivets in making their brogans. The soles of the brogans are affixed to the uppers via two rows of diamond-shaped, wooden pegs; both stacked heels, are attached via square nails. As mentioned, both brogans remain in good condition, with some minor seam separations, wear folds and worn soles; we have chosen not to clean the brogans, so they do retain some period, wear soiling. This is only the third pair of original, Civil War period brogans we have had.
