Model 1859 Sharps Carbine with a Patchbox

In overall very good condition, this “NEW MODEL 1859”, as stamped on the barrel, as well as the other Sharps’ legend – “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” is mechanically great, with all of its original parts. The oiled walnut stock is in good condition, showing signs of wartime use and wear. The steel exhibits an aged patina, with some minor rough spots, here and there. No cartouches are visible near the saddle ring bar; the serial number, stamped on the tang of the breech, is – 52214.

To the left of the hammer, on the lock plate, is stamped – “C. SHARPS PAT. / OCTOBER 1853”; slightly above the round element of the hammer is stamped, in the lock plate – “R.S. LAWRENCE PAT. / APRIL 12TH 1853”. This model was made from 1859 to 1866. With its serial number in the 52,000 range, it was manufactured, in all likelihood, during the Civil War. There were a total of 33,000 carbines made, with serial numbers between 30,000 and 75,000.
