Boyd and Sons Boston Pattern 1839 Cartridge Box with Original SNY Cartridge Box Plate
SOLD
Boyd and Sons Boston Pattern 1839 Cartridge Box with Original SNY Cartridge Box Plate – This early Pattern of 1839 cartridge box was made to be carried on a shoulder belt only and, therefore, does not have belt loops on the back of the box. Stamped on the interior flap that covers the cartridge tins, is the following:
“J. BOYD & SONS
MANUFACTURERS
OF ARMY
ACCOUTREMENTS
BOSTON.”
These early cartridge boxes were designed to carry 40 rounds of .69 caliber cartridges, which could have been round balls or buck & ball. The exterior cover of the box retains its original, SNY, box plate; this plate exhibits a nice, aged patina, commensurate with the age of the box; the plate is affixed to the cover of the box by its original, leather thong, channeled through the box plate’s loops that extend through the front cover. Both original cartridge tins remain in the box and are in excellent condition. The cartridge box remains in overall very good condition, with no flaking and only very minor finish loss; there is some crackling to the finish along the sides of the box, but no finish loss or flaking; both sling buckles and latch closing tab remain complete and in place.
