1825 – 1830 Watercolor of a British Rifleman – This well executed watercolor depicts a first quarter of the 19th century, British Rifleman, in the field. The well-uniformed soldier is wearing a green colored, double-breasted coat and matching color pants; his coat is adorned with epaulettes, and his belt features an early snake buckle. Affixed to his belt is a brass-hilted saber bayonet or short sword. The rifleman clutches a single glove in one hand, while his other hand, which is gloved, holds what appears to be some kind of swagger stick. Also attached to his belt is a diminutive chain with a flintlock rifle vent pick and frizzen pan brush. Also visible, in this highly detailed painting, is a decorative, red watch fob. The soldier is wearing distinctly pointed boots; his cap is perhaps, a leather bell-crown style or shako; on the cap is a large, shako plate, with an infantry hunting horn insignia and a bulbous pompom; hanging from his cap is an aiguilette. Noteworthy, is the background; to the right of the soldier are numerous tents and what appears to be a campfire. The painting is not signed but is quite well executed and is housed in its original, mahogany frame and covered with its original glass; the back is wood covered which is held in place by period, early cut nails. The condition and color of the painting are excellent.
