Civil War M1863 Artillery Horse Bit Attached to its Original M1863 Headstall – This bit and headstall were issued in 1863 and utilized by both enlisted and officer light artillerymen. The bit is the correct, M1863, iron-brass faced bit, with M1863, intertwined “USA”, bit bosses. “US” is stamped in one branch of the port and one interior side of the cheek branch; just below this stamping, on the cheek branch, is stamped the initials of the U.S. inspector – “AGB”(A. G. Bennett); on the opposite side of the cheek branch, at the headstall attachment slot, is stamped “FRAZEES C^O.” The headstall, constructed of black bridle, leather is still supple, has all the correct straps and remains in overall good condition; the various buckles are the correct type for an artillery bit – brass-faced, horseshoe-shaped iron. The headstall is complete and has the correct, M1863, intertwined, “USA” rosettes, as well.
