Civil War M1863 Artillery Horse Bit Attached to its Original M1863 Headstall – This bit and headstall were issued in 1863 and utilized by both enlisted and officer light artillerymen. The bit is the correct, M1863, iron-brass faced bit, with M1863, intertwined “USA”, bit bosses. “US” is stamped in one branch of the port and one interior side of the cheek branch; just below this stamping, on the cheek branch, is stamped the initials of the U.S. inspector – “AGB”(A. G. Bennett); on the opposite side of the cheek branch, at the headstall attachment slot, is stamped “FRAZEES CO.” The headstall, constructed of black bridle, leather is still supple, has all the correct straps and remains in overall good condition; the various buckles are the correct type for an artillery bit – brass-faced, horseshoe-shaped iron. The headstall is complete and has the correct, M1863, intertwined, “USA” rosettes, as well.
