Confederate Cap Box with Lead Finial and Soldier’s Name Scratched Inside the Cover Flap
$850
Confederate Cap Box with Lead Finial and Soldier’s Name Scratched Inside the Cover Flap – This cap box is definitively a wartime product of Confederate manufacture. The box is constructed of a russet brown leather, with outer and inner cover flaps; there is a single belt loop and a lead finial; there was originally a sewn latch tab, but that is no longer in place. Of interest is the name of the original soldier owner, deeply scratched on the interior side of the cover flap – we dusted a white powder into the name, but we are still unsure of the identity of the wartime owner – perhaps, the last name is “Gillam”. The cap box remains in excellent condition, although the inner flap has separated from the box, but remains completely intact, including both side ears. This flap could be readily put back in place. This cap box is quite well made and may have been the product of a Confederate arsenal.
