Fine Example of Civil War Model 1858 Bullseye Canteen
$575
Fine Example of Civil War Model 1858 Bullseye Canteen – Of the many Civil War canteens that we have had, this example is perhaps one of the finer ones; the canteen retains its full, woven wool cover and complete, cotton sling. The sling is unusual in that it presents a striped, woven appearance and, unlike any other example we have had or seen, it is hand-sewn to the cover of the canteen, apparently to prevent the sling from slipping. This sewing was not completed at the arsenal / site of production, but completed, in the field, by the original soldier owner. The canteen is an early war issue, using twine tied to the ring of the stopper; almost the entire length of original twine remains. Deeply scratched into the pewter spout are the initials “WHC”. The canteen remains in excellent condition, with only a few, minor, small holes in the wool cover; the sling remains in very good condition, with an original sizing knot tied by the canteen’s owner, during the war.
