Original Civil War Corps Badges

Original Civil War Corps Badges – Civil War corps badges were distinctive insignia used by the Union Army to identify soldiers by their corps and division. Introduced in early 1863, these badges were typically worn on the top of the forage cap or kepi, the left side of a hat, or over the left breast. The badges were made of metal, bullion embroidery or fashioned out of cloth. This group of war period corps badges are all metallic; two have colored wool incorporated in the badge, thereby designating a wearer’s division – Red – 1st Division; White – 2nd Division; Blue – 3rd Division. The badges remain in overall, excellent condition. The 2nd Corps badge has a name and 1862 date scratched into the face – as of this posting, we have not determined the war record of the soldier – his name appears to be: “C. ? Coe”. Three of the badges have “T-pins”; the 2nd Corps badge has an old, homemade, soldered pin on the back of the badge.
