Dug Confederate CS Two-Piece Belt Plate – We obtained this belt plate from the family of the collector / digger who had amassed a large and significant collection, starting in the early 1970s; he hunted in the Fauquier County, Culpeper, Winchester, Brandy Station, Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Fredericksburg areas, so unfortunately, we cannot pinpoint the site of the actual excavation of this plate. This brass, sand cast plate appears to be in the so-called “Virginia Style”, possibly made in Richmond; it has pointed serifs and a slightly raised border around the disc, with a tapered step-up contour on the back of the tongue. According to Steve Mullinax’s discussion of this type of plate, in his “Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates”, many examples of this style of plate have been excavated in 1864 Virginia sites around Culpeper and the Valley. The plate remains in excellent dug condition. The tongue and wreath were excavated together – this is not a “marriage”. Finishing file marks are visible on areas of the back of the plate.
