Dug Confederate Tin Drum Canteen – This rarely offered, Confederate tin drum canteen was an element in a long-time collector / digger’s collection that we recently obtained from his descendants. Although there is no provenance as to the location of the excavation of the canteen, it must have been in sandy, well-drained soil, as it remains in overall, good dug condition, with surface oxidation apparent, but only a relatively modest amount of significant deterioration; there is an obvious hole in one side of the canteen and a period damaged crease on the other side. The latter mentioned damage may have occurred during the period of use, thereby necessitating its original, soldier owner, to discard it. The spout and sling guides remain intact; the surface of the canteen has obvious oxidation, but is stable and relatively strong. We have had several dug, Federal canteens, but this is the first complete Confederate tin drum canteen that we have had.
