Dug / Excavated Private Contract M1861 Rifled Musket – Found Near Sailor’s Creek Battlefield

SOLD

Dug / Excavated Private Contract M1861 Rifled Musket – Found Near Sailor’s Creek Battlefield – This excavated ’61 Contract musket is almost complete – all parts are present, with the exception of the trigger guard; all other parts were found together and include:

the barrel with the sight still affixed to the barrel; the ramrod (characteristic swell-tip variety); all three barrel bands; butt plate; nose cap; lock plate with most of the internal mechanical parts – the date of “1864” is clearly legible on the part of the plate just behind the hammer. We had the gun and parts electrolyzed, so they remain in good, stable, dug condition. This gun is part of a large grouping of dug relics from the collection of a long time digger from Amelia County; he hunted, during the late ‘60s into the mid-70s, principally in the Sailor’s Creek battlefield area.
