Confederate D-Guard Bowie Knife Manufactured by Burger & Bros. of Richmond, VA – This extremely rare example of a Confederate D-guard, Bowie knife is clearly stamped, on one side of the upper blade area: “BURGER & BROTHERS” – in a long curved arch, parallel to the blade; and “RICHMOND – VA.” in a straight line, beneath the maker’s stamping. Peter and Henry Burger of Richmond, antebellum manufacturers of saws, briefly turned to making edged weapons for the Confederate army, at the onset of the Civil War. According to noted arms and memorabilia authority and long time collector, Norm Flayderman – “There are very few known examples of their swords and none of their bayonets. A few Bowie knives bearing their distinctive large markings are recorded.” Indeed, Flayderman pictures an example of the same type of knife, in his book, “The Bowie Knife – Unsheathing an American Legend”. The Bowie that we just obtained, remains in very good condition; it retains it original, grained oak or walnut grips, pinned (original pins) to the hilt or handle. The iron D-Guard is peened to the pommel area and has not been re-peened or removed at any time, since its original manufacture. The blade, a broad single edge, with a clip point, evidences some minor pitting, no rust and not nicks in the blade. This is an extremely rare, early war Confederate edged weapon.
