Exceptional M1850 Foot Officers Sword by Ames Ornately Appointed – This fine M1850 Foot Officers sword, manufactured by the famed Ames Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, is one of the more highly decoratively appointed examples we have encountered. Although not a presentation sword, this sword has a richly engraved, gilded, brass scabbard – beautifully engraved, on one side of the scabbard, are patriotic motifs, augmented by additional floral elements. Etched on one side of the blade is the following:

Ames Mfg Co

The blade is engraved with finely executed patriotic and floral embellishments; the original leather washer remains in place at the point of insertion of the blade’s tang, into the grip. The gilded, brass cross guard and knuckle bow exhibit fine, high relief, floral elements. The hilt is covered in shagreen, with a complete, twisted, brass wire.

This sword is a superb example of the skill and craftsmanship executed by the Ames Company, prior to and during the Civil War; it is indeed a unique sword, unlike any non-presentation, Model 1850 Foot Officers sword we have encountered before. The sword remains in overall excellent condition.
