Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber with Extensively Black Painted Guard and Grip Indicative of Confederate Use

Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber with Extensively Black Painted Guard and Grip Indicative of Confederate Use – This typical M1860 Cavalry saber remains in overall very good condition; it is accompanied by its original steel scabbard, which is also in very good condition. The drag of the scabbard is stamped “JC” for James Chattaway Federal Arms Inspector from 1862-1863. The saber has no additional markings on it; there is no maker’s name or date on either side of the ricasso; the blade remains in excellent condition, and the leather “washer” is still in place between the ricasso and the brass guard. The leather grip is in excellent condition and retains all of the twisted brass wire. Of note, is the black paint that was applied during the period of use on almost the entire brass of the guard, as well as on the leather grip and twisted wire; we have encountered several war period Confederate sabers with this black paint on the guard; the presumption is that the Confederate cavalrymen painted the shiny brass black to cut down on the reflective glint that might more readily belie their position to Federal troops.
