P. S. Justice Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber in Original Scabbard
$750
P. S. Justice Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber in Original Scabbard – This saber, which remains in excellent condition, is stamped on the ricasso:
“P.S. JUSTICE
PHILAD”
P.S. Justice was primarily a retailer, so the blade is most likely imported, having been manufactured in Germany (Prussia); the sword was probably assembled by Justice. The wooden grip, covered in black bridle leather (in good condition), is very likely cord-wrapped, exhibiting the M1840 tapered style of configuration. All of the original twisted, brass wire wrap is present and remains tightly woven around the grip. The obverse ricasso is unmarked; the brass doubly branched hilt retains its original buff washer. There are two stampings on the drag of the scabbard:
“S & K
J M.”
The S & K represent the Prussian blade manufacturer – Schnitzler & Kirschbaum – the JM. is the stamp of the U.S. inspector. This sword remains, as mentioned, in excellent condition, evidencing no modern polishing or cleaning; the scabbard is also in superior shape, with no dents or dings.
