Colt Special Model 1861 Rifled Musket
$2,450
Colt Special Model 1861 Rifled Musket – This musket is a fine example of the only muzzle-loading, rifled, percussion longarm manufactured by Colt. These guns, all .58 cal., were produced during the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865; approximately 100,000 of these muskets were produced, most of which were used to fulfill state contracts, like this example, which has “NJ” stamped into the barrel, opposite the lock plate and just forward of the breech plug. These rifles were finished “in the white or bright”, as this example. The stock of the gun is oiled walnut and it retains its original finish; other than a few minor dings, the stock is in excellent condition. The barrel is affixed to the stock by three, split-ring barrel bands, which are tightened and held in place via screws; the middle band has a sling swivel; the other sling swivel is attached to the trigger guard. The rear part of the barrel, just above the “NJ” is stamped with the usual, Civil War period, government stamping “VP” over an eagle head; the date “1863” is stamped on the top of the barrel, just distal to the breech plug; next to the “NJ” stamping is the word “STEEL”. On the lock plate, just forward of the hammer, is stamped:
“U.S.
COLTS PT F.A. MFG CO
HARTFORD CT”
Behind the hammer is stamped:
“1862”
The nipple bolster is stamped with an American eagle. The tang of the butt plate is stamped with “US”. The hammer on these muskets represents a unique shape. The ramrod is uniformly round rod with a tulip headed tip. This musket, as mentioned, remains in excellent condition and is completely functional. The bore retains some rifling. The measurements are as follows: OL – 50”; BL – 40”
