Civil War Federal Issue 9-Button Heavy Artillery Enlisted Man’s Frock Coat
$6,500
Civil War Federal Issue 9-Button Heavy Artillery Enlisted Man’s Frock Coat – These rare coats were generally known as an enlisted man’s frock coat during the war years, most collectors today refer to these as “9-button coats.” This example is a fine representative of one of the more rare, enlisted man’s Civil War uniforms. With some minor moth damage to the back collar area that could be readily mitigated, if so desired, this coat remains in overall very good condition – strong color to the coat proper and bright red piping. There are four of the original nine breast, coat-size, Eagle A buttons remaining – all with matching period back marks – “Waterbury Button Co. * Extra”; both back two buttons, also coat size Eagle As, remain at the waist. The four functioning cuff buttons, Eagle As, are present. The interior of the skirts are lined with brown polished cotton and both have pockets; the chest areas are lined in a dark brown, polished cotton and are quilted and lightly padded; the sleeves are lined with white cotton. In the upper shoulder area of the right sleeve lining is the maker’s stamp: “K. H & C0 / P” – at this juncture, we have not been able to identify this specific maker. The interior of the coat remains in good condition; at some point, someone apparently added two fabric pads just above each shoulder opening, perhaps to reinforce the batting; we have chosen to let these pads remain in place, as they do not detract from the display of the coat. The skirts are full-length and unhemmed; the back of coat has a center vent with two buttons at top of the vent. This coat is the same pattern as those issued to Union Infantry troops, with the only difference being the red piping, as opposed to blue for infantry. The collar retains its original, japanned hook and eye closure device. All of these nine-button, enlisted frock coats are rarely found today; the artillery coats are decidedly more difficult to find, as compared to the infantry examples. *Should the buyer so wish, we can obtain some additional Eagle A coat buttons, at an additional charge.
